What is the best way to root a tree or shrub cutting?

I am trying to root cuttings from a dogwood tree and a wisteria plant. What is the best way to do this? I have seen rooting jars which claim to encourage rooting just with water. I have a lso seen powders and other substances that claim to do the trick. Which way is the best way?

The easiest way to propagate a plant from cuttings is to take softwood cuttings. Softwood can also be thought of as "new wood". Timing is the most important factor here! Take your softwood cuttings after the plants have put on 6-8" of new growth. That will be in late spring/early summer for most of the country. Dipping the butt end of the cuttings in rooting hormone does help the rooting process, but timing is more important to successful rooting. If your first cuttings fail right away, take more cuttings a few days later after the new wood has hardened a bit more.

Then stick the cut end of the cutting into sand or light potting soil. Do not add fertilizer. Fertilizer will encourage top growth at the expense of root growth. Keep the cuttings in a shaded or semi-shaded area until after they root. Humidity helps them root faster.

Reply:Use a rooting hormone powder.

Take cuttings 6-8" long, remove any leaves from the bottom 1/3 of the cutting. Dip the cutting in the hormone powder, then place the cutting in damp sand, in a container. Loosely cover the container with plastic wrap and place in a shady area, outside. Roots should form in a couple of months but, check for root formation in about 3 weeks. Some sprout sooner.
Reply:Hi there. There is a hormone root powder. Personally, I have found that just putting the cuttings in water and changing the water daily seems to work just as well. Some cutting will naturally not make it whether you use the root hormone powder or not. These cuttings will flourish and the beauty will make it all worth while. Have a great week.
Reply:put them in a pail of water and in a dark place.DO NOT CHANGE THE WATER
