My wisteria looks very healthy, no bloom as yet. I need to cut it back as its gone wild, I havent ever really pruned it properly, just cut a few bits off. How far back can I safely prune and when please?
4 year old wisteria.?
This time of year Wisteria usually is dormant if you live in the U.S. You can cut it back as far as you need to.
Reply:cut back all growth to a couple of inches in february
it can take eight years for them to flower but pruning helps
Reply:I, too, have a 4 yr. old Wisteria and as a rule of thumb I prune it almost the same way I prune my rose bushes. I prune 1/3 off each runner. I braided mine early so it has taken on a tree form and blooms beautifully each year. Hope this helps.
