I don't think there is an incorrect way to prune it. Once started, it is almost impossible to kill without chemicals. Although pretty, I consider it a pest, almost as bad as Kudzu. At our old home in AL we had a vine in the front yard that maybe my ancestors planted. Today, it grows everywhere through the yard climbing the shrubs and trees. Even the trash that was dug and cut from the yard, then taken to the nearby woods has sprouted and grown. A tall oak tree in the edge of the woods has vines growing to the top. They are about 3 inches thick at the bottom and will eventually kill the tree unless I cut them. Wisteria is only good with very controlled care, in my opinion.
